about

I’m proud to feature, for our second release in the Fifteen Minutes of Anonymity “audio postcards” initiative, a characteristically immersive piece from Francisco López: Untitled #421 [Étude aux Grillons].

López’ work spanning the past five decades has shown a remarkable consistency of philosophical vision while simultaneously evolving technically and stylistically. His determination to work with the full spectrum of available sounds has led to intriguing syntheses of the kind that animate most durable art: mixing the biological with the mechanical, the familiar with the alien, and material that is barely perceptible with that which overwhelms the senses. This ‘blurring’ aesthetic, accompanied by a rejection of didactic narrative features, has informed a body of work that has made possible a linkage between creative movements like “lower-case sound,” noise-as-music and more.

The piece contributed for this series, as the title suggests, heavily features contributions from our insect friends. However, as per usual for the artist, other elements are introduced and then applied with an intensity that blurs microscopic and macroscopic levels of perception. The chthonic low-end, communicative silences and the cascade of insect stridulations all combine for a mesmeric effect that eventually causes the clear sonic points of reference to mutate into something more unexpected.

All listeners who purchase the audio will also receive a postcard (limited in this edition to 100 copies) with a striking silver and black design on durable 18-pt Super card stock - the black reverse side will require use of (ideally) silver paint pen to write on.

Note that, as always, you can request for the postcard to be sent to you on its own, or in an enclosing envelope so that you can send to a recipient of your choosing.
