about

The latest release is our Fifteen Minutes of Anonymity “audio postcards” series is a unique collaboration between Al Margolis and Thomas Bey William Bailey.

Al Margolis is a composer/performer, improvisor, and painter. Since 1984, often under his project name If, Bwana, he has worked in the field of non-commercial, non-popular music and sound. Long-time fans of networked audio will also know Al from his trailblazing cassette label Sound of Pig and from his later curatorial efforts for Pogus Productions, an excellent archival resource for fans of the sonic arts.

This collaborative piece, “Destiempo”, takes its name from a short-lived magazine co-founded by Jorge Luis Borges (the title translates literally to “A Wrong Time”). I felt this was a nice cue for the music that resulted here: not rooted to any specific time nor place, owing to a deliberate attempt to make the sound sources themselves bear only traces of their provenance.

Al’s careful attention to detail and conversational approach invigorates this one, leading to an (also deliberate!) impression that dozens of distinct sound objects are being magnetized towards some dense but invisible core.

I also included a binaural mix of the Destiempo piece with this release. Thanks to the people at the Dear Reality software company, I was able to experiment with an alternate mix to provide a yet more intimate and involving version of the original.

As always, purchase of the Bandcamp album includes a limited edition postcard (100 copies) and FREE shipping to anywhere in the world. New subscribers to the FMOA Correspondence Club will receive this along with the previously issued FMOA 4 + FMOA 5 cards.
