about

Here is a new collaboration between Y'ng-Yin Siew, aka Reverse Image, and myself. A "nurikabe" is a type of Japanese spirit, generally visualized in the shape of an endless or mobile wall, that impedes the progress of night travelers. I found this an interesting metaphor for the sense of perpetual out-of-reach restlessness / sleeplessness that informs a lot of my creative processes.

YYS initiated this with a number of tightly focused, rhythmic or looping modular synth sequences, which I then fed into various randomizing tools and then 'played' segments of with a vector synthesizer in Ableton Live. As such, they bear no resemblance to the source material, but this is more or less the point of artistic collaborations, isn't it - we end up creating something that is beyond our individual, customary experiences and practices.

While the above material acts as the 'lead' instrument here, my own contributions here are cut from the same cloth as the songs on "Metaphysics of Autonomous Shadows": ghost choirs, hammer-percussion exclamation points, acidic glowing passages of a-melodic, textural synthesis material.

The curious are of course invited to experience Yin's new album as Reverse Image, "The Silence That Does Not Exist".

Some future collaborations may branch off from this one, time permitting.
