about

The next salvo from "Unsichtbare Gegner Mark II" continues the journey into a more streamlined, insistent sound based on a concept I might call "ecstatic paranoia": the irrational feeling of being so bombarded by fear, and apprehension, that this condition becomes the basis for actual enjoyment and anticipation of still greater uncertainty.

I decided, once again, I didn't need to look far for "new" musical elements that communicate this feeling: they all exist in my favorite manifestations of Berlin / Birmingham techno and post-industrial dance / EBM, as well as in my own nagging memories of spectral, strangely uninhabited outposts of hyper-civilization in urban Japan, Eastern Europe and elsewhere.

Some new elements have found their way into this one, from the ghostly "dub techno" shadings on "Assume All Communications..." to the warped choral voices on "The Ribbon of Extremes," to the shortwave intrusions on "Propaganda By Deed". Nonetheless, it still rides on reliable rails - sharp snare hits, infectious arpeggiation, disembodied pads and trails of melody.

Influences are generally a thing of the past (and this is particularly the case after the sad passing of R.H. Kirk, to who the opening track is dedicated). But sounds can be endlessly re-contextualized and slotted into new social, cultural contexts, and so Unsichtbare Gegner is not "retro" music - nor is this even looking to the "future". This music is for those both confronting and engaging with the now.

First 50-copy pressing of this album is available on magenta-shelled cassettes.
