about

This was originally released on cassette in 2010 by Anthony King's label Banned Production. AMK invited me to be part of a new cassette series upon hearing my previous release, U.U.U.U., itself being part of my "conflict trilogy" along with the albums Progressive Lycanthropy and A Desperate Expediency.

What you see in the title is what you get, but perhaps not exactly what you expected. I had no stated goal with this one other than the usual challenges to myself: to see how well I could engage with a sub-genre ("turntablism") where engaging with it at all tends to invite knee-jerk comparisons to the same two or three trailblazers in that field. I also wanted to step back from "digital noise," so-called, to make something along the template of Robert Ashley's "Automatic Writing" or Nurse With Wound's tribute to that album, "A Missing Sense." In other words, I wanted something simultaneously seductive and frightening...a sort of audio distillation of the most interesting people I encounter in life. I'm fairly happy with the results, and hope you will be also.

For those actually interested in technical specifics: USB turntables were used, themselves running into a host of digital plugins. Records were played at different speeds, "scratched" (in the case of some Japanese advertising flexidiscs), and so on - I also made sure to include the lovely sound of the turntable "clearing its throat," that is, having the tone arm jostled and used percussively. Some semi-aleatory patches were set up on the laptop to run the melancholic tone generator / ping-ing sounds that recur throughout , and samples were otherwise kept to a minimum.
