about

Title here derives from the proposed name of serial murderer Dennis Nilsen’s lengthy autobiography, eventually seeing light as “History of a Drowning Boy.” Despite the apparent trendiness of this subject matter, I am more interested in how this phrase conjures up the subject matter of Thomas Metzinger’s treatise Being No One: i.e. “the phenomenal self is not a thing, but a process.” This idea that there is no continuous, “innermost” self has additional precedents in both ‘Eastern’ and ‘Western’ philosophies, see e.g. the following:

“David Hume is one of those who use the term ‘authenticity’ in the sense of genuineness, of things being what they profess in origin or authorship. But Hume did not apply this notion to the concept of the self, arguing that the term ‘self’ is a meaningless metaphysical obfuscation denoting an allegedly permanent entity that is in fact no more than a bundle of impressions and ideas to which we
mistakenly ascribe an identity.”
